My Bergen Bag Story! Recycled from 1964!

in Nov 11, 2024

I am an Afro-Danish designer, born in Copenhagen to a Danish mother and African father. It was in London about 1963, when they first met, my biological mother was studying there from the early 1960s. I was adopted to my very international woven family; Norwegian mother, Polish-German father, half-Jamaican adoptive sister. My parents were artsy and fashionable beatnicks of their time. My dad Werner Pawl was a painter and teacher. My mom Erna Berit was a creative art teacher working with weaving and fabric dying.

I inherited my late mothers vintage 1960’s leather tote bag before she died on her 88th birthday in 2019. The bag has always been very special to me and for years I tried to recreate it for my shop. It has finally come to life as a modern leather tote for everyday life and work. This bag is now carrying a new Legacy as the center piece of my Brand ONW. As I see it, the cornerstone of what OwlNWood stands for, simplicity and a homage to the past, the 1960-1970’s, the memories of my childhood growing up in Denmark. OwlNWood has always been an extension of myself, it represent “everything I love and respect” and vintage quality is a big part of what my mother taught me in my upbringing .

The essence the Bergen Bag represents stems from the inspiration and iteration over the 2 years it took me to finalize the bags development. The first one (1) is my moms original bag. The (2) bag is a vintage sample I found in Copenhagen some years after. The (3) is a beautiful vintage bag I found at a Fleemarket in California. The (4) is my first prototype and the last (5) is the BERGEN BAG. This was a long process, but I love the result.
